These 20 pieces inspired by the landscape, primarily our central Virginian Blue Ridge mountains, pay homage to the life and legacy of Wendell Berry. Entitled “Commonwealth” the works celebrate the landscape we share in common though acknowledges the complicated histories that have not allowed this land to be equally enjoyed by all. In his essay entitled “Racism and the Economy” Berry writes: “A proper community, we should remember, is a commonwealth: a place, a resource, and an economy. It answers the needs, practical as well as social and spiritual, of its members - among them the need to need one another. The answer to the present alignment of political power with wealth is the restoration of the identity of community and economy.” What might it look like if we acknowledged our need for one another and this land more? What might it look like if we chose to act more like humans than machines? This show seeks to offer a space to sit with such questions through many loose layers of non toxic hand mixed oil paint, including locally foraged Virginia red clay.
The works will be on view Nov 19-Jan 7. A drop in with the artist will be Thurs, Dec. 10, 5-7pm. Be sure you’re on my email list by filling out the form for an email invite.
